One significant advantage of the iPhone (and to a lesser extent, Android) is the number of distinct devices a developer has to buy/test with. Apple is very nice because it only has one form factor. With Android, you can get the dev phone and comfortably develop for all Android devices. For some other platforms, there's so much variance that it is impractical to develop apps without buying a handful of different devices.
